PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN TO REDUCE ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) MOTOR FAILURE COST AT JAMALCO

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (ABSTRACT)

Jamalco is an alumina manufacturing company located in Jamaica which uses various equipment to industrialize the Bayer process. In 2014 Jamalco was a company not being profitable and hence implemented a cost saving initiative to turn the fortunes of the company around. This Project 200 initiative has allowed the company to lower its operating cost.
Jamalco uses several equipment to manufacture alumina. Lowering the maintenance cost of these equipment is an area of opportunity, specifically AC motors which has cost the company in excess of 100, 000, 000 JMD in 2016 due to failures. Internal research conducted by the Jamalco Motor Team in 2016 indicated that a portion of the motor failures were due to inadequate motor protection devices, hence an opportunity exists to reduce motor failure cost by at least 10% by upgrading the obsolete motor protection systems on select motors. The project management plan was developed to achieve this initiative by March 31, 2018.
The general objective of the Final Graduation Project was to create a project management plan to reduce motor failure cost by 10% at Jamalco by March 31, 2018. The specific objectives were developed for each of the ten (10) management plans. The scope management plan’s objective was to provide the detailed work required to achieve the project objective. The cost management plan was created to ensure that the actual cost is within 5% of the budgeted cost while the time management plan was created so that the project duration does not exceed March 31, 2018. The quality management plan defined the quality parameters and how they would be achieved. while the risk management plan addressed enhancing opportunities and mitigating risks.  The human resources management plan’s objective was to ensure that 100% of human resources required are available and have exceeded the defined worker requirements while the communications management plan kept all major stakeholders informed. The procurement plan was created to select the most qualified and cost effective vendors while the stakeholder plan managed and addressed stakeholder expectations. The objective of the integration management plan was to integrate all the management plans. The project methodology framework employed by the FGP includes information sources, research methods, assumptions and constraints, and tools and deliverables. The information sources of the project methodology included interviews, statistical data, legal documents, meetings, email communications, the PMBOK® Guide and library databases. The research method used to arrive at conclusions was the analytic method where larger elements are broken into simpler elements which are analyzed to form holistic conclusions (source: UCI presentation). Each specific objective had constraints, which limited the way the objectives were executed. Also, several assumptions were made for each specific objective. Several tools were applied in the project management process to obtain project deliverables that helped to achieve the specific objectives of the project.
